Pre-Build – Primer Experiment

 

 

 

 


Initial Prep of all 12 aluminum pie pans

 

 

·      From left to right

o   Three vertical Sharpie marks (#  #  #)

o   Vertical stripe of Liquid Wrench Lube & Penetrating Oil

o   Vertical piece of masking tape

o   Vertical stripe of White Lithium Grease

o   Vertical piece of masking tape

o   Vertical stripe of 3-in-One Oil

o   Three vertical Sharpie marks (#  #  #)

 

 

1 – Cleaned with soap and water

 

 


2 – Cleaned with Super Clean (degreaser from Walmart)

 

 


3 – Cleaned with Clorox Clean-Up

 

 


4 – Cleaned with Formula 409

 

 


5 – Cleaned with Mr. Clean

 

 


6 – Cleaned with 90% Isopropyl Alcohol

 

 


Pre-Primer 1-Step Clean Summary

 

 

·      Best at removing Sharpie marks

§  Note:  Water sheeted off after Super Clean whereas it beaded up after everything else.

 


7 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a 3 minute soak in white vinegar

 

 


8 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a 3 minute soak in CLR.  The surface finish was distinctly more matte and less shiny.

 

 


9 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a 3 minute soak in Isopropyl Alcohol.

 

 


10 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a 3 minute soak in Acetone

 

 


11 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a 3 minute soak in 3:1 Water:EkoEtch

 

 


12 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a scrub with 3:1 Water:EkoEtch (3 minutes).  A Scotch Brite sponge was used for the scrub.  The surface finish was noticeably more matte and less shiny, however not as much as the CLR pie pan.

 

 


Pre-Primer 2-Step Clean Summary

 

 

 

1.   8 and 12 were distinctly better than all of the others.  8 was probably slightly better than 12, but the CLR was full strength whereas the Water:EkoEtch was 3:1.

2.   11

3.   7, 9, and 10 tied for last place and were definitely not as good as 8, 12, and 11.

 

·      From best to worst

1.   8 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a 3 minute soak in CLR. 

2.   12 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a scrub with 3:1 Water:EkoEtch (3 minutes). 

3.   11 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a 3 minute soak in 3:1 Water:EkoEtch

4.   7 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a 3 minute soak in white vinegar

5.   9 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a 3 minute soak in Isopropyl Alcohol.

6.   10 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a 3 minute soak in Acetone

Post-Primer Treatment

 

 

·      Fingernail scratch test

·      Drilled and dimpled 4 holes

·      Sawed off the bottom 1/3 of each pan with the band saw

·      Nail scratch and duct tape test

o   Scratched an X with a nail and put duct tape over the scratch.

o   Peeled the duct tape off.

 


1 – Cleaned with soap and water

·      Sharpie marks still visible.

·      Did not pass the fingernail scratch test.

·      No chipping around the drilled and dimpled holes.

·      No chipping along the sawed edge.

·      Failed the duct tape test.  The duct tape removed primer where the masking tape originally was.

 


2 – Cleaned with Super Clean (degreaser from Walmart)

·      Did not pass the fingernail scratch test.

·      No chipping around the drilled and dimpled holes.

·      No chipping along the sawed edge.

·      Failed the duct tape test.  The duct tape removed some primer along the edges of where the masking tape originally was.

 


3 – Cleaned with Clorox Clean-Up

·      Did not pass the fingernail scratch test.

·      No chipping around the drilled and dimpled holes.

·      No chipping along the sawed edge.

·      Failed the duct tape test.  The duct tape removed a fair amount of primer where the masking tape originally was.

 


4 – Cleaned with Formula 409

·      Did not pass the fingernail scratch test.

·      No chipping around the drilled and dimpled holes.

·      No chipping along the sawed edge.

·      Failed the duct tape test.  The duct tape removed almost all of the primer where the masking tape originally was.

 


5 – Cleaned with Mr. Clean

·      Did not pass the fingernail scratch test.

·      No chipping around the drilled and dimpled holes.

·      No chipping along the sawed edge.

·      Failed the duct tape test.  The duct tape removed almost all of the primer where the masking tape originally was.

 


6 – Cleaned with 90% Isopropyl Alcohol

·      Did not pass the fingernail scratch test.

·      No chipping around the drilled and dimpled holes.

·      No chipping along the sawed edge.

·      Failed the duct tape test.  The duct tape removed a fair amount of the primer where the masking tape originally was and also some primer in other areas.

 


Summary of Pans With a 1-Step Clean

 

 

·      Soap and water did not remove the Sharpie marks

·      None passed the fingernail scratch test.

·      All passed the drilled and dimpled hole test.

·      All passed the sawed edge test.

·      From best to worst on the duct tape test

o   Best – 2 – Cleaned with Super Clean (degreaser from Walmart)

o   1 – Cleaned with soap and water (but Sharpie marks still visible)

o   3 – Cleaned with Clorox Clean-Up

o   4 – Cleaned with Formula 409

o   5 – Cleaned with Mr. Clean

o   Worst – 6 – Cleaned with 90% Isopropyl Alcohol

 


7 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a 3 minute soak in white vinegar

·      Passed the fingernail scratch test.

·      No chipping around the drilled and dimpled holes.

·      No chipping along the sawed edge.

·      Failed the duct tape test.  The duct tape removed a little of the primer along the edges of where the masking tape originally was.

 

 


8 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a 3 minute soak in CLR.  The surface finish was distinctly more matte and less shiny.

·      Passed the fingernail scratch test.

·      No chipping around the drilled and dimpled holes.

·      No chipping along the sawed edge.

·      Passed the duct tape test.  The marks where the duct tape was are duct tape residue.  There was no peeling of the primer.

 


9 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a 3 minute soak in Isopropyl Alcohol.

·      Passed the fingernail scratch test.

·      No chipping around the drilled and dimpled holes.

·      No chipping along the sawed edge.

·      Passed the duct tape test.  The marks where the duct tape was are duct tape residue.  There was no peeling of the primer.

 


10 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a 3 minute soak in Acetone

·      Passed the fingernail scratch test.

·      No chipping around the drilled and dimpled holes.

·      No chipping along the sawed edge.

·      Passed the duct tape test.  The marks where the duct tape was are duct tape residue.  There was no peeling of the primer.

 


11 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a 3 minute soak in 3:1 Water:EkoEtch

·      Passed the fingernail scratch test.

·      No chipping around the drilled and dimpled holes.

·      No chipping along the sawed edge.

·      Passed the duct tape test.  The marks where the duct tape was are duct tape residue.  There was no peeling of the primer.

 


12 – Cleaned with Super Clean followed by a scrub with 3:1 Water:EkoEtch (3 minutes).  A Scotch Brite sponge was used for the scrub.  The surface finish was noticeably more matte and less shiny, however not as much as the CLR pie pan.

·      Passed the fingernail scratch test.

·      No chipping around the drilled and dimpled holes.

·      No chipping along the sawed edge.

·      Passed the duct tape test.  The marks where the duct tape was are duct tape residue.  There was no peeling of the primer.

 


Summary of Pans With a 2-Step Clean

 

 

 

·      No Sharpie marks.

·      All passed the fingernail scratch test.

·      All passed the drilled and dimpled hole test.

·      All passed the sawed edge test.

·      Only #7 did not pass the duct tape test (Super Clean followed by white vinegar).

·      There was a 5-way tie for the best duct tape result.  Super Clean followed by CLR, Isopropyl Alcohol, Acetone, or EkoEtch gave a very good result.

·      Including the pre-priming results, the best overall results were with Super Clean followed by either CLR or EkoEtch.
